When it comes to pizza, Chula Vista locals know where to go—Joe & Ernie’s Pizzeria. Located in Eastlake, this family-friendly establishment is more than just a place to grab a meal; it’s a testament to the power of a small business owner, community, and great food. They have been in business for over 19 years, and I remember when they first started on Broadway on the West Side of Chula Vista. Ernie invited me to come out and sample his delicious pizza and pasta.

From Humble Beginnings to Community Favorite

Joe & Ernie’s Pizzeria was founded in 2005 by two friends, Ernie Carrillo and Joe, who were inspired by a unique recipe from Illinois. With enthusiasm and a business degree from San Diego State, Ernie dove into the restaurant world. Their first location on Broadway in Chula Vista was a learning experience, with challenges like costly equipment investments and rising lease costs. Despite the hurdles, they persisted.

In 2011, Ernie moved the business to Eastlake, which continues to thrive today. This strategic move increased foot traffic and created a welcoming environment for customers. I love his Eastlake location.

Bringing Holiday Joy to South Bay Families: The Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway

The holidays can be tough for families struggling to make ends meet. The Chula Vista Police Foundation’s Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway was held today, continuing its heartwarming tradition. For over 20 years, toys and holiday meals have been provided to more than 600 South Bay families in need.

This morning, the magic was experienced as families gathered to receive toys, enjoy a meal, and soak up the festive atmosphere. From Santa’s grand entrance to the tireless efforts of community volunteers, the event embodied the true spirit of the holidays.

Who Benefits from the Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway?

The event served as a lifeline for families who might not otherwise experience the joy of the season. Invitations were sent to participating families ahead of time, with tickets or vouchers provided for attendance. As early as 6 a.m., parents and children lined up to receive toys and a meal with all the trimmings. The joy on children’s faces as they selected their gifts was a priceless sight that made the early morning efforts worthwhile.

The 20th Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway hosted by the Chula Vista Police Foundation was held on Monday, December 16th, and it was great to see so many families participate.

Chula Vista Police Foundation: Making It All Possible

Sponsors and volunteers made the Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway possible. Local businesses and organizations, including Walmart, Community Health Group, Cushman Foundation, Gaylord Pacific, Seven Mile Casino, Bob and Sue Sutherland, Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Last Hope for Paws, and the City of Chula Vista, supported the event.

The Chula Vista Police Department and Chief Roxana Kennedy have led this initiative. Over the years, their dedication has turned the event into a beloved community tradition. From its early days as “Giving Thanks” with LaDainian Tomlinson to its current iteration, the mission of bringing joy to families during the holiday season has remained unchanged.

A Morning Full of Magic

Bright and early at 7 a.m., Santa Claus arrived in his sleigh (a custom hot rod) to distribute toys and spread holiday cheer. Brand-new bicycles, scooters, and skateboards were raffled off to lucky winners. Families also had opportunities to interact with beloved characters such as the Grinch, CVPD’s Hot Rod, and the Chick-fil-A Cow.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, former San Diego Chargers joined Chief Kennedy to distribute meals, showcasing incredible support from both the sports and local communities. Children had their photos taken and enjoyed moments that will surely be cherished for years to come.

The generosity of the community made the success of the Annual Holiday Meal & Toy Giveaway possible. Toy donations, volunteer hours, and monetary contributions significantly impacted the event. The gathering reminded everyone of the power of supporting those in need.

Chula Vista Christmas Circle: A Tradition of Holiday Cheer

For over 60 years, the Chula Vista Christmas Circle has brought joy and holiday spirit to the community, making it one of the most cherished traditions in San Diego County. Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, this festive event is a must-see during the holiday season. Mark your calendars because this year, the Christmas Circle opens on Saturday, December 14th, at 5:30 PM, and the magic continues nightly through December 26th.

I have been going to this Chula Vista Holiday staple for a long time. My parents took me here, and I have taken my family here. My family from all over San Diego County love to come down and walk the circle. This past week I had the chance to meet some of the homeowners and even had the chance to talk with Judith who has lived here since it first started. This spot made my list of top places to see Holiday Lights in Chula Vista. If you missed the list, be sure to check it out.

A Glimpse Into the History

The Christmas Circle began in the 1950s as a small neighborhood event created by families, many of whom were military veterans. What started as simple tree-to-tree lights and candy-cane-wrapped trees for local children has grown into a spectacular community-wide display. The founding members, including Ken Wear, envisioned something special for their kids, and today, their vision has blossomed into a holiday tradition that draws visitors from all over.

Judith, one of the original organizers, shared how this all-volunteer effort has thrived over the years. “We’re getting older, but the younger generation is stepping up to keep it going,” she said. This seamless handoff ensures that Christmas Circle’s legacy will continue to shine brightly for years to come.

What Makes It Special

Christmas Circle is entirely run by volunteers, fueled by the community’s holiday spirit. Families decorate their homes with intricate light displays and festive décor, each adding their own creative touch. Jesse, one of the younger volunteers, explained, “It’s something for the family. It’s unique and brings joy to everyone.”

Walking through Chula Vista Christmas Circle, you’ll encounter smiling faces, holiday greetings, and a sense of togetherness that warms even the chilliest December evenings. The decorations vary from traditional to even more modern displays, ensuring something for everyone to enjoy.

The Burger King on East H Street—yes, the one tucked in the Costco shopping center—has officially closed its doors. But wait, there’s more! Rumor has it that a drive-thru Starbucks is swooping in to claim the spot. While nothing’s confirmed yet, this could answer the age-old question: What could make this area even more of a traffic nightmare? Thanks, Starbucks. Can’t wait to see how this one pans out.

Bag of Beans is Brewing in Eastlake

This is the one I’m most excited about! Bag of Beans is setting up shop in Eastlake Village Walk, taking over the old Pho restaurant spot. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re a café with roots in the Philippines, and their only other location is over there. So, Chula Vista, consider yourself chosen. A quick peek at their Instagram for the Philippines location will have you drooling over the stunning interiors and dreamy coffee creations. I can’t wait to see how they bring it to life here in our neighborhood.

Millenia: The Future is Here

The Millenia Building in the Millenia community continues to steal the show as the best-looking office space in Chula Vista. And now, it’s about to get even more exciting. First, SDSU is bringing a nursing program to the building—a huge win for local education. But the cherry on top? A production company called Chula Vista Entertainment Complex is moving in. Yep, Hollywood 2.0 might just be happening in our backyard. Who knows, maybe we’ll all get our 15 seconds of fame as extras!
