Get ready to pay more for parking in Chula Vista; City approves an increase

Well, folks, the Chula Vista City Council has done it again. Last month, they decided to squeeze a little more out of our wallets by hiking parking meter rates in the Downtown Parking District by 25 cents. Starting January 2, 2025, you’ll be paying 75 cents an hour for two-hour and four-hour meters and 50 cents an hour for 10-hour meters. For reference, it used to be 50 cents and 25 cents, respectively, but apparently, those days are over.

The First Increase Since 2007 (Not That It Makes It Any Better)

This is the first increase since 2007—yeah, 2007! I guess they figured it was time to catch up, but at least they’re bragging about how these are still some of the cheapest parking rates in San Diego County. I’m sure that’ll be a real comfort when you’re fumbling for change or figuring out how to pay with these new-fangled smart meters. I still haven’t gotten the hang of it. As long as they don’t take away the ability to plop in coins, I’m ok with them. I’m not sticking my credit card in a machine just to pay fifty cents.

Parking Spots: Free? Good Luck

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, the Downtown Parking District offers 1,500 parking spots, about half of which are free. Big whoop, right? If you’re wondering where this district is, it’s boxed in by E Street to the north, Del Mar Avenue to the east, Garrett Avenue to the west, and H Street to the south. Good luck finding one of those free spots. Street parking has been worse around the downtown area ever since they started charging for parking.

Remember when the city removed the outdoor patios from along Third Avenue? This was over the summer. I wonder if it was to get more from the parking meters?

Why the Hike? The City’s Explanation

Why the hike, you ask? Well, the City claims it needed more funds to operate and maintain the shiny new meters it recently installed. They also want to beautify the streets, repaint curbs, update signs, and meet ADA parking standards. This sounds noble, sure, but it still means we’re footing the bill. I’m still trying to figure out how much ACE Parking is getting out of the deal.

The Consultant and Their “Brilliant” Plan

Apparently, they brought in a consultant back in 2022 to tell them what they already knew: people like convenience. This consultant developed a parking management plan, which the City Council approved in September 2022. One recommendation was to install smart meters with card and contactless payment options. These little gadgets showed up on Third Avenue in October 2023. It’s fancy stuff, but let’s not pretend it doesn’t cost us in the end.

Progress? Or Just More of the Same?

So there you have it: higher rates, smarter meters, and a city council that’s convinced this is progress. Meanwhile, we’re just trying to park without breaking the bank. I have lived in this community for a long time and remember when parking along Third Avenue was free.

Top Three Chula Vista Events 2024

Last year brought us so many fantastic events—from intimate pop-ups to major celebrations like the Lemon Festival. As someone who loves being part of the Chula Vista community, I had a great time attending and connecting with others. With 2024 behind us, it’s time to highlight my top three Chula Vista events of the year. Here’s hoping 2025 brings even more exciting moments! Be sure to follow Chula Vista Living for updates, photos, videos, and all things local.

1. Cruise for the Cause

This annual event, organized by Xavier the X-Man, is always a highlight for me. In June 2024, it took place at Otay Ranch Town Center, drawing car clubs from across San Diego to support the Emilio Nares Foundation. The event blends cruising culture with community spirit, making it a must-attend for car enthusiasts and supporters of a good cause.

Although the Cruise for the Cause 2025 date has yet to be announced, I will share the details as soon as they are available. To stay updated, follow Xavier The X-Man on Instagram or check out my full event recap for photos and highlights.

2. Lemon Festival

No Chula Vista event list would be complete without the Lemon Festival. This iconic celebration recalls Chula Vista’s history as the lemon capital of the world. Held every August in Downtown Chula Vista, the festival features vendors, live music, art, and a kids’ zone—truly something for everyone.

I spent the day with my family enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, and it was an unforgettable experience. I’ll share the 2025 festival date as soon as it’s announced. For more updates, you can also follow the Downtown Chula Vista Association on Instagram.

I love attending the Chula Vista Lemon Festival every year. There is so much to see and do, plus it’s a fun way to get out and enjoy the beautiful sunny weather.

3. Chula Vista El Grito Celebration

The El Grito Celebration at Memorial Park Bowl continues to grow, and 2024 was no exception. This event honors Mexican Independence Day with live music, a vendor market, and the iconic call of “El Grito.” By the time the main event began, Memorial Bowl was packed with attendees waving Mexican flags and enjoying the festivities.

Given its rapid growth, the event might soon need a larger venue. If you missed it, check out my video recap for a glimpse of the excitement. I’m looking forward to seeing how this celebration evolves in the future.

Big Changes Coming to the Chula Vista Bayfront: What You Need to Know

What is happening, Chula Vista? Exciting things are happening at the Chula Vista Bayfront as we gear up for the grand opening of the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center. But with progress comes some temporary inconveniences. If you’re a regular along the scenic paths of the Bayfront, here’s what you need to know about upcoming closures and detours.

Chula Vista Bayfront Bicycle Path Closure Details

Starting Monday, January 6th, a section of the Sweetwater Bicycle Path & Promenade connecting to the Bayshore Bikeway will be temporarily closed. The closure will stretch from Lagoon Drive to H Street, meaning walkers and cyclists traveling between E Street and J Street Marina must find alternate routes. Unfortunately, the detour along Industrial Avenue isn’t as picturesque, but it’s the best option.

I was down there over the weekend shooting a video and spoke with some residents about the closure. Many were unaware of the bike path closing for a month. They were sad to see it close for more than a month. “I love coming out here and getting my steps in. It’s a beautiful path that so many of us love to use.” Said Amber a Chula Vista resident who was walking the path on Sunday. She also mentioned that there have been a lot of changes to the area and is hesitant about all these changes.

I’m sure this is just one of the many closures and changes that are coming as we get closer to the grand opening of the Gaylord Pacific Resort.

The Port of San Diego has posted signs around the Bayshore Bike Path alerting walkers & bikers that the trail will be closed. Many residents were unaware of the closure.

Other Temporary and Permanent Closures

The Port of San Diego has shared a list of closures in the area. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Temporary Closures:
    • G Street (between Marina Parkway and Bayside Parkway)
    • Marina Parkway (between G Street and Lagoon Drive)
    • Lagoon Drive (between Bay Boulevard and Marina Parkway)
  • Permanent Closures:
    • Quay Avenue (south of G Street)
    • Sandpiper Way (between Chula Vista Marina and G Street)
    • Bayside Parkway (between Quay Avenue and Sandpiper Way)

Detour routes and signs will be placed around the area to guide pedestrians and cyclists. Thankfully, the Bayshore Bikeway will remain open, although some bike lanes along nearby streets will be affected. For more news and closure information, visit the Port of San Diego website.

A Look Ahead to the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center

Once completed, the Gaylord Pacific Resort will be a game-changer for Chula Vista. As Gaylord Hotels’ first location on the West Coast, this development spans a massive 535 acres along the Bayfront. It’s set to bring new opportunities, tourism, and amenities to our community.

While these closures may be inconvenient now, they’re all part of the process of transforming our Bayfront into something extraordinary. As the opening date approaches, I’ll update you on any additional detours or changes.
