Calling all adventurous families with little explorers! Mark your calendars and get ready for a thrilling outdoor adventure on June 3rd, the first Saturday of June. It’s none other than National Trail Day, a day dedicated to discovering the breathtaking trails that our incredible City has to offer. I love to get out and explore all the great Chula Vista hiking trails around us. Here is a little history of the day plus my list of top trails to visit in the community.

Imagine the joy on your children’s faces as they embark on a journey through scenic trails, surrounded by nature’s wonders. It’s the perfect opportunity to step away from our busy lives and immerse ourselves in the great outdoors.

But wait, there’s more! According to a recent release from the California News Service, communities across the nation are gearing up for this momentous day. From exciting hiking expeditions to community clean-up events, there’s something for everyone to participate in and enjoy.

Beyond the thrill of exploration, National Trail Day also presents us with a chance to honor the hallowed grounds upon which these trails were forged. Let’s not forget that these lands were once the cherished ancestral homes of indigenous groups. Alanna Smith, a parks program associate for the incredible nonprofit Save the Redwoods League, beautifully reminds us, “Thinking about how these trails are created, and ways that we can help maintain them, that’s a big part of National Trails Day. Chula Vista 4th Fest: A Spectacular Celebration of Independence Day

Are you ready, for Chula Vista 4th Fest? This highly anticipated event, organized by the Chula Vista Special Events Committee, will be held again at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center (CVEATC), formally the Olympic Training Center. Come watch the fireworks shoot off over Otay Lakes in sync with patriotic music.

The fireworks show starts at 9 PM. The event is free, and gates will open at 7 PM. Parking is very limited, so we highly recommend you get there early to secure your spot. You can also find parking at the New Hope Church not that far from the center.

Food and Refreshments: No celebration is complete without delicious food, and the Chula Vista 4th Fest understands this well. Attendees are treated to various culinary delights, with food trucks and vendors offering a diverse selection of mouthwatering treats. From classic American fares like hot dogs and hamburgers to international cuisines and delectable desserts, there’s something to please every palate. Last year the Texas BBQ Truck was delicious, and I hope they will return this year.

Chula Vista 4th of July Festival
Who remembers when the Chula Vista 4th of July festival was held at J St. Marina? This is a shot for the event back in 2006.

Spectacular Fireworks Display: As dusk descends upon Chula Vista, anticipation reaches its peak for the grand finale of the Chula Vista 4th Fest—the spectacular fireworks display. The night sky is transformed into a canvas of colorful bursts and shimmering lights as fireworks illuminate the darkness, creating a breathtaking spectacle for all to admire. Families gather on blankets and lawn chairs, their eyes fixed on the mesmerizing show as “oohs” and “aahs” fill the air. The dazzling display serves as a reminder of the freedom and unity that the Fourth of July symbolizes.

Embracing Community and Patriotism: Beyond the festivities, the Chula Vista 4th Fest fosters a strong sense of community and patriotism. It brings together people from diverse backgrounds, creating an inclusive environment where everyone can celebrate the nation’s independence. The event will provide an opportunity to honor and appreciate the sacrifices made by the men and women who serve in the armed forces.

The Chula Vista 4th Fest is an annual tradition that encapsulates the spirit of Independence Day. I still miss the fireworks at the Chula Vista Marina; maybe the show will return when the new hotel is built down there. Guess we will find out in 2025.
