Historic Chula Vista Fire Station One Gets New Life After Major Renovation

The historic Chula Vista Fire Station One is entering the future while honoring its past. After 77 years of service, the station has undergone a much-needed renovation and was officially rededicated this week.

Dedicated initially on Valentine’s Day in 1948, Fire Station One holds a special place in the heart of Chula Vista’s fire service. The station is so iconic that it’s featured on the department’s patch. While the station’s classic fire alarm remains, the rest of the facility has been upgraded to serve the growing community better.

The updates include a modern kitchen, a new weight room, a meeting space, and refurbished bays equipped with updated tools and vehicles. These improvements are essential, as Chula Vista Fire Station One is one of the busiest fire stations in the nation. Chula Vista Fire Chief Harry Munn called it the “cornerstone of the fire service that’s provided to the community.”

The community was invited to attend the rededication of Chula Vista Fire Station One and tour the upgrades.

A piece of history also hangs on the station’s wall—a bell from the beloved “Old Goose” fire truck and a commemorative plaque. The Old Goose was retired in 1948 when the Fire Department moved into the then-new Fire Station One at 447 F Street. For two decades, the truck’s whereabouts were unknown until it was discovered sitting in a lemon orchard owned by a local dentist. In 1968, Dr. M. Brent Campbell offered the Old Goose as a gift to the city. Restoration efforts soon followed to bring the antique engine and body back to life.

Funding for the recent station renovation came from Measure P, a half-cent sales tax approved by Chula Vista voters in 2017. The measure has generated $245 million, which has been dedicated to improving the city’s infrastructure, including fire stations, parks, roads, and storm drains. This is Measure P’s third time supported a fire station project in Chula Vista.

Chula Vista Mayor John McCann praised the measure, noting that it has helped the city maintain critical services as costs continue to rise. While he jokingly admitted that Measure P didn’t cover the cost of the ceremonial scissors used at the rededication, he emphasized the tax’s role in keeping the city on solid financial ground.

In November, 73% of Chula Vista voters agreed to extend Measure P for another decade. Chief Munn stressed the importance of this decision, pointing out that the price of essential equipment like ladder trucks has skyrocketed to over $1 million in just five years.

With the renovations complete, Chula Vista Fire Station One is ready to continue serving Chula Vista for years to come. The station stands as a reminder of the community’s commitment to safety and progress, blending history with the tools needed for the future. Downtown Chula Vista is exciting, and if you haven’t visited lately, you’re in for a treat! Over the past few years, this once-quiet area has become a vibrant food, culture, and community hub. Whether you’re a local (like me) or just passing through, you’ll want to explore all the incredible developments. From new restaurants to fun events, there’s something for everyone. Let’s dive into the latest updates along Third Avenue!

Local Businesses Bringing Life Back to Third Avenue

One of the things that make Third Avenue great is all the locally-owned businesses. These small businesses are owned by community members who are passionate about Chula Vista. There’s something for everyone, from the trendy Tender Hooligan to the delicious treats at Mmm Cakes. The beauty of downtown Chula Vista is that most of the businesses are run by locals who grew up here, which makes the experience even more personal and unique.

One of my favorite spots downtown is Mujer Divina Coffee & Burritos. Chef & Owner Priscilla Curiel is so passionate about her business, and it shows. Everyone loves her and supports everything she does. Her burritos are homemade and delicious. She is also working on opening her brand new Tuetano Taqueria right next door very soon. I can’t wait to see it. Be sure to follow her on Instagram for all of the updates and photos of her yummy burritos.

Dominic Li Mandri, district manager for the Downtown Chula Vista Association, commented, “The people opening shops here are from the community. They’ve come back to contribute to the revitalization effort, and that’s what makes this place special.”

The Tender Hooligan recently opened along Third Avenue, and it is a trendy new spot that you need to check out. Be sure to try their coffee specialties.

A New Italian Gem: Acqua E Farina Trattoria Romana

One of the most significant changes in downtown Chula Vista is the transformation of Farmer’s Table into Acqua E Farina Trattoria Romana. This new Italian restaurant promises to bring a slice of Rome to the South Bay. Opening on September 18, Acqua E Farina will offer fresh pasta, table-side cannoli, and even vintage-style dessert service. It’s like stepping into a trattoria straight from the cobbled streets of Rome! This is going to be a must-visit spot if you’re a fan of Italian cuisine.

Community member Steve Garcia, co-owner of 3 Punk Ales, shared, “It’s amazing to see how downtown is evolving. The addition of new spots like Acqua E Farina really puts Chula Vista on the map.”

Third Avenue’s Craft Beer Scene Is Thriving

Speaking of 3 Punk Ales, the craft beer scene in Chula Vista is exploding! Over the last few years, several breweries have opened up along Third Avenue, creating a fun and laid-back atmosphere for beer lovers. With places like Chula Vista Brewery and Thr3e Punk Ales, there’s no shortage of unique brews. Plus, many of these breweries host live music and food trucks, making it the perfect place to hang out with friends on weekends.

Local brewmaster Steve Garcia mentioned, “We’re proud to be part of the downtown community. People from all over are discovering the charm of this area, and we’re excited to see it grow.”

Exciting Upcoming Events in Chula Vista

The fun doesn’t stop with food and shopping—downtown Chula Vista is also packed with events that bring the community together. Last month was the Lemon Festival, which was bigger and better this year. Third Avenue was alive with so many people all enjoying this fun community event.

You should keep an eye out for the announcement of the 2024 Starlight Parade. Last year’s parade was a huge hit, and I was thrilled the event had returned to the area. I can’t wait to hear the official announcement about this year’s parade, which will be coming very soon.

The Transformative Economic Impact of the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center in Chula Vista

Chula Vista is on the brink of an economic transformation, thanks to the highly anticipated Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center. With projections of a $500 million annual boost to the local economy, $11.5 million in tax revenue, and 3,000 permanent jobs, this development is poised to redefine the city’s financial landscape. Let’s explore how this billion-dollar project will impact the region and its residents for years to come.

A $1.35 Billion Catalyst for Growth

The Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center is part of a $1.35 billion initiative to revitalize 500 acres of vacant bayfront land. The project’s first phase, a $1.13 billion investment, combines public funding and revenue streams to support infrastructure and development. This includes a 22-story, 1,600-room hotel, a state-of-the-art convention center, nine restaurants and bars, and a 4.25-acre water park. The resort is strategically located just seven miles from downtown San Diego, making it accessible to both U.S. and Mexican travelers.

Job Creation and Workforce Development

Job creation is one of the cornerstones of the Gaylord Pacific Resort’s impact. During construction, the project has already employed 650 workers, with plans to expand to 800. Once operational in 2025, the resort will generate 3,000 permanent jobs in areas such as hospitality, management, and convention operations. Additionally, the ripple effect is expected to support 4,000 indirect jobs throughout San Diego County. To facilitate this growth, the resort’s Human Resources office will open in February, providing local residents with access to career opportunities. The resort is also actively hiring for executive positions, marking an exciting phase for workforce development. Local businesses will benefit from increased foot traffic, further enhancing job opportunities in downtown Chula Vista and beyond.

Enhanced Property Values and Infrastructure

The resort’s development is already reshaping Chula Vista’s skyline, bringing with it significant infrastructure improvements. These include new roads, utilities, and a 3,000-space parking garage.

Nearby, over 200 acres of parks, open spaces, and walking trails are being developed, boosting property values and enhancing quality of life for residents. Sweetwater Park is set to open this February, providing another outdoor haven for the community.

Additionally, plans are underway to redevelop the bayfront park into the new Harbor Park, which will further enhance the area’s appeal.

The resort is just the start of a broader effort to transform the Chula Vista Bayfront into a thriving hub of recreation, commerce, and community. The project also promises to fill previously empty lots with new businesses, echoing the success seen near the Gaylord Rockies Resort in Aurora, Colorado.

Revenue Streams for Public Benefit

The financial benefits of the Gaylord Pacific Resort extend beyond direct economic contributions. The city of Chula Vista stands to gain $11.5 million annually in tax revenue, funding future public amenities such as parks and infrastructure improvements. Pre-booked conventions will provide a steady income stream, while increased tourism and business activity will bolster the local economy. This sustainable revenue model positions the resort as a long-term economic driver for the region.

Business Opportunities Abound

Local businesses will discover unprecedented opportunities for growth as the resort’s convention center attracts more than 3,000 attendees per event. Surrounding developments, such as Amara Bay and Bayview Point, will bring additional hotels, residential units, and commercial spaces to the area. Retail shops, restaurants, and service providers will thrive as tourism and local spending power increase. This diversified economy will create a resilient business environment for years to come.

Are You Ready For The Gaylord Pacific Resort

The Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center is more than a luxury destination—it’s a transformative investment in Chula Vista’s future. From creating thousands of jobs to injecting $500 million annually into the economy, the project’s impact will be felt across the region. As construction nears completion in 2025, the community can look forward to a new era of prosperity and opportunity. This development isn’t just reshaping the bayfront; it’s reshaping lives.

Jimmy John’s Sandwich Opening In Eastlake

0

Let’s be real—I had almost given up hope. After what felt like an eternity of anticipation, false starts, and endless speculation, the day has finally arrived: we have an official opening date for the brand-new Jimmy John’s Sandwich shop in Eastlake Chula Vista! If you’ve been following this saga, you know this has been a long time coming. And trust me, I’m as shocked as you are that it’s happening.

Mark your calendars, sandwich lovers! The new Jimmy John’s will be popping up at 2260 Otay Lakes Rd #101, Chula Vista, CA 91915—right in the Vons shopping center, next door to Dunkin’ Donuts. Speaking of which, here’s a fun tidbit: the owner of the Dunkin’ Donuts is also the brains behind this Jimmy John’s location. Talk about a powerhouse duo!

Now, I’ll admit it—I may have been a little skeptical about this whole thing. In fact, a few months ago, I even made a video ranting about how this might never happen and suggesting they just take down the signs already. (Hey, I call it like I see it!) But in my defense, the City of Chula Vista isn’t exactly known for speeding through construction permits. So, yeah, I might’ve been a bit harsh. And when those doors finally open, I’ll be the first to eat my words—and one of their famously delicious sandwiches.

So, when can you get your hands on those fresh, fast, and freaky good subs? Here’s the scoop on their grand opening Sunday February 2nd 10 AM to 12 AM:

  • The first 25 guests in line starting at 10:00 AM will win Free Sandwiches for a Year!
  • They will have giveaways
  • Music
  • Prize wheel
  • A Ribbon Cutting

Are you as excited as I am to have Jimmy John’s in the Eastlake area finally? Whether you’re a longtime fan or a curious first-timer, this is one opening you won’t want to miss. Let me know in the comments if you’ll be lining up on day one—I know I will!
