Get ready, Chula Vista. Another major development just broke ground at the Chula Vista Bay Front. The Amara Bay Chula Vista had its ceremonial groundbreaking today, and the project is moving forward. As someone who loves seeing new progress and positive changes in our community, I couldn’t be more thrilled to share the details about this development.

This one is going to be a big one. If you think the Chula Vista Bay Front Hotel & Resort is significant, this project will completely revamp the whole J Street Bay Front area.

Now, before you start hating on the project and posting about how we’re going to lose our beloved Chula Vista Marina, let’s take a look at it and learn more about what is coming.

The Amara Bay Project, led by Pacifica Companies, is a substantial part of the Chula Vista Bayfront transformation. The project spans over 35 acres and includes a mix of luxurious residential units, commercial spaces, and a hotel. The vision behind Amara Bay is to create a vibrant and modern waterfront community that brings new life and economic growth to our area. Living in Amara Bay means not only do you have money, but you get to enjoy the finer things in life. The development will feature 1,500 high-end condominiums spread across seven towers. These units range from 900 to 3,500 square feet and put a nice dent in the pocketbook. Imagine having access to top-notch amenities like a fitness center, spa, media room, pet grooming facilities, board room, outdoor pool, barbecue area, outdoor kitchen, fireside lounge, and even a gourmet restaurant. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a pet lover, or someone who enjoys having money, Amara Bay is just for you, not me. I have no money, LOL.

Enhancing the Community and Economy

One of the most exciting aspects of the Amara Bay Project is its positive impact on our local economy and community. The development is expected to create numerous job opportunities, boost the local economy, and provide new commercial opportunities. In addition, significant infrastructure improvements, such as the realignment and widening of key roadways like J Street and Marina Parkway, will enhance traffic flow and accessibility to the bayfront area. Public amenities, including a beautifully landscaped public park and retail spaces, will further enrich our community.

Let’s hope they address the traffic issues before they start building all these projects down here. They are building the hotels and condos way faster than they work on the city streets.

Timeline for Amara Bay

Construction planning for Amara Bay began in 2022, and we can expect major components, like the Gaylord Pacific Resort, to open by summer 2025. The impact of the Gaylord Pacific Resort on the area has already sparked additional interest and development, making Chula Vista an even more attractive destination. As the Amara Bay Project progresses, we can look forward to seeing our waterfront transformed into a bustling hub of activity and enjoyment.

Strategic Importance of Amara Bay Chula Vista

The Amara Bay Project is an integral part of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, which aims to transform a vastly underutilized industrial landscape into a thriving recreational, residential, and resort destination. This project will enhance public access to our beautiful waterfront, improve local infrastructure, and help establish Chula Vista as a world-class destination.

It’s crazy when I hear people say our little city is going to be this “World-Class Destination.” I would love to see it, but there is little for those visiting here to see or do. I know about the Living Coast Nature Center, but other than that, what else would be a tourist destination in Chula Vista? I will have to think about that one.

However, the Amara Bay Project is set to bring unprecedented growth and development to Chula Vista. Food truck fans, rejoice! Jorge Vargas, the food truck king of Chula Vista, has opened his first brick-and-mortar street taco shop, Taqueria By El Prieto. Conveniently located near the H Street Trolley Station in the former Tacos El Gordo spot, this new taqueria is here to satisfy your late-night taco cravings until 2 a.m. on weekdays and 4 a.m. on weekends. With an extensive menu that goes beyond tacos, including breakfast options, we had to check if it lived up to the hype.

Taqueria By El Prieto: A Legacy of Flavor

Jorge Vargas has been a staple in the Mexican food scene for 27 years, operating Mariscos El Prieto food trucks across Chula Vista, El Cajon, and University Avenue. He also owns Don Vargas Birriera y Mariscos, a sit-down restaurant on Main Street in Chula Vista specializing in Tijuana-style birria de res, menudo, and seafood.

Menu Highlights

At Taqueria By El Prieto, the menu features traditional street tacos, tostadas, mulitas, and vampiros. For the adventurous eater, unique proteins such as cabeza (beef head), buche (pork stomach), lengua (beef tongue), and tripe (beef intestines) are available. These proteins can also be enjoyed on fries or a papa loca, a loaded potato with butter, sour cream, avocado, and melted cheese.

“I don’t have any limitations when it comes to food. A taqueria has always been on my mind, and now I want to establish myself as a restauranteur in specific locations,” Vargas shared with eater. With plans to open a second location in Chula Vista within a month and a third in the South Bay soon after, the future looks bright for this taco haven.

My Experience

I recently visited Taqueria By El Prieto and tried the steak mulitas and a carnitas burrito. The steak mulitas were very flavorful and satisfying, although there was a mix-up as I had ordered the steak queso taco. The carnitas burrito was tasty but a bit greasy, with the grease soaking through the tortilla. The mild salsa was amazing, and I look forward to trying the medium and hot options next time. The salsa bar also includes peppers, onions, and limes.

My friend who also loves taco shops and all things Mexican food gave it a thumbs up. “Wow, these tacos are amazing! They definitely beat the place that sold tacos here before. This is my new go-to taco spot! By far the best in Chula Vista. I tried the cabeza, asada, and adobada, and they all were delicious, melting in my mouth with incredible flavor.”

I remember when I was a kid, thinking million-dollar homes were only in places like La Jolla or Rancho Santa Fe. Never would I have guessed we would have houses here in Chula Vista close to the $6 million mark. Even on the west side, you have houses past the $2 million price tag—that is unbelievable.

I like to dream so I decided to hope on Zillow just to see where are the most expensive houses in Chula Vista are. Pretty much all of the pricey pads are going to be on the eastside, but I did see some on the west side as well. The house I really love, at 415 Hilltop Drive, is still up for sale at $2.5 million. That house has always been a favorite of mine and if I hit the lottery I would snag that up so fast.

If you love to dream like me, then here are the top three expensive homes in Chula Vista as of June 2024. Out of these three homes, number two is my favorite. The $6 million one is nice, but I have to go with number two and save about $2 million.
