The new Raising Canes at the Chula Vista Center is now open. I was out there to see how it was and the place was a mad house. The traffic was crazy. They had the drive-thru snake all the way to Subway in the mall and then cut across the parking lot. Pretty sure this weekend it is going to get even worse. I will check it out, but after the hype wears off.
Here is a little throw back Thursday for you. I took this photo back in 2006 when they were almost ready to open the Otay Ranch Town Center. They had a media day and invited all the media out to see the new mall and talk about all the great things coming. In 2006 there wasn’t much in the area. Pretty much everything south of the mall was empty. Flash forward to now and it is completely different. Not only has the mall changed, but the area around it.
I have a ton of old photos from Chula Vista, Eastlake and Bonita so stay tuned cause there is plenty more coming.
What is going on in Chula Vista today? I want to tell you about the Otay Ranch Town Center Farmers Market. My wife and I went there last Tuesday; it was a great time. They have a lot of food, craft vendors, and more. The market runs every Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM right down the center of the mall.
It has been a while since I was out at this market, maybe two years ago. One of the things you notice right off the bat is all the food vendors. They have a great selection of food you can purchase or take home with you. I went for the grilled cheese with bacon, and it was delicious; it’s prepared fresh, so definitely check it out. The variety here is huge, and I will be back to try some more.
You will also find plenty of sweet treats, so get ready to be tempted. I had the cream-filled donuts, and they were delicious. Next time, I will try the ice cream when it gets a little warmer. There are also local vendors selling cookies and Mexican treats. You are definitely going to be busting your diet plan when you visit. LOL
One thing I saw little of was produce vendors. When I was there, they had only one spot selling fresh fruit. I’m not counting the vendor selling plants that are not produce. There is also a wide variety of vendors selling homemade goods and a few selling newer items like toys.
I recommend going out, taking the family, and walking the market on a Tuesday night. I’m sure during the summer months, this is going to get busy, so be ready to wait for your food.

We can all agree that there is nothing quite like spending a day at Otay Lakes – except when the weather isn’t cooperating. I remember one particularly gloomy day when the clouds hung low in the sky and the air was damp and chilly. It was a far cry from the sunny, warm days we usually enjoy during the summer months. While I was hiking with my wife I grabbed this shot of the mountains in the background. Just minutes before the clouds were covering the tip of the mountain.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions, the lake was still beautiful in its own way. The water was calm and glassy, reflecting the muted colors of the sky above. And while it wasn’t exactly beach weather, there were still plenty of people out enjoying the day – fishing, kayaking, or just taking a leisurely stroll along the shore. I love to come down to Otay Lakes and walk around or even just sit and take in the peacefulness.
I’m so ready for the sun to return to Chula Vista and we get that warm summer weather.
