What’s the Buzz Chula Vista?

Earlier this year, the South Bay Water Board of Directors kicked off a rebranding effort to better connect with the community. They want a fresh logo that reflects the district’s role as the governance branch of Sweetwater Authority. For those who might not know, Sweetwater Authority ensures that 200,000 residents in South Bay have access to safe and reliable tap water.

And here’s where you come in! The Board of Directors is inviting YOU to design the new logo. South Bay Water President Manny Delgado shared his excitement about the project. “We are thrilled to connect with the residents and business owners we serve by asking them to submit their vision for our district’s logo. We know there is incredible talent in South Bay, and we look forward to seeing the creativity of our community.”

Why Participate?

This competition is more than just creating a logo—it’s about being part of something historic. Manny Delgado mentioned how the district has evolved over the years. “It is a look forward. In the past, it was a lot of irrigation, a lot of farming and agriculture, but we have moved on as we have grown in the community. It is exciting also because this is something historic. So, we wanted to open it up to the community and give them the opportunity to showcase their talents. I think it is exciting. I think we have great talent here, so we are looking forward to what comes up.”

About the South Bay Water (Sweetwater Authority)

South Bay Water (SBW) was formed as an independent California Special District in 1951 to represent local residents. Voter approval assured the move toward access to imported water from the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA), the County’s water wholesaler. At that time, local water resources were inadequate to serve the needs of those living and working in the growing Sweetwater Valley.

In 1977, as a result of another public initiative, SBW and National City formed a joint powers public water agency, named Sweetwater Authority (Authority). Today, the Authority manages and operates the system that provides water to National City, western and central portions of Chula Vista, and Bonita. South Bay Water acts as the governance branch of the Authority, providing five elected representatives to sit on the Authority’s seven-member Governing Board (Board). Two additional directors are appointed to the Authority’s Board by the Mayor of National City, subject to City Council confirmation.

SBW remains committed to ensuring reliable and high-quality water services for the community. Through its governance role, SBW continues to uphold its mission of advocating for the needs of local residents and fostering sustainable water management practices. The collaborative efforts between SBW and Sweetwater Authority exemplify the dedication to providing essential resources while maintaining a focus on innovation and efficiency in water supply management.

All the top events happening in Chula Vista July 2024

We had an amazing June filled with events, and summer is still going strong in Chula Vista. One of the best things about our community is the abundance of free, family-friendly events. I love keeping you in the loop so you can take advantage of it. Make sure to get out there this summer and enjoy them. You might even spot me having a great time!

Chula Vista Fourth Fest at the Elite Training Center in Eastlake

Thursday, July 4th at 7 PM Location: Chula Vista Elite Training Center

Join the community for the big fireworks show at the training center. Gates open at 7 PM, and the fireworks start at 9 PM. Last year, people were lining up before 6 PM. They will have food trucks, but I recommend bringing your own food as the lines can get long. Last year, we waited almost 45 minutes for tacos.

Salsa Under the Stars at the Otay Ranch Town Center

Tuesday Various Days at 4:30 PM Location: Otay Ranch Town Center

I attended the first event in June, and it was a blast! Manny Cepeda and his Orchestra had everyone dancing and enjoying the music. The event starts at 4:30 PM at the food pavilion. Grab some food from the Farmers Market and have fun. Check their website for the schedule, as the days may change.

Chula Vista Firefighters Pancake Breakfast

Saturday, July 6th at 8 AM Location: Chula Vista Fire Station Number 5

Here is another fantastic event for a great cause. Bring the family for a pancake breakfast and enjoy various activities. For $8, you get a firehouse-style breakfast of buttermilk pancakes, sausage, and hash browns cooked by firefighters. Purchase tickets online or on the event day, but I suggest getting them early to avoid lines.

Summer Sundays at the Village Walk in Eastlake

Every Sunday in July at 5:30 PM. Location: Village Walk in Eastlake

The Village Walk hosts a different car club and live band every Sunday from 5 PM to 7 PM. It’s a perfect way to end the weekend. There are kids’ crafts and other activities, and many businesses offer discounts. Check their website for the car club schedule.

Dog Gone Fun at the Otay Ranch Town Center

Tuesday, July 16th at 5 PM Location: Otay Ranch Town Center

Celebrate the dog days of summer with fun activities for you and your four-legged friends on Tuesday, July 16, from 5 PM to 7 PM. The event coincides with the regular Farmers Market, including farm stands, street foods, and handicrafts.

Music in the Park hosted by the City of Chula Vista

Saturday, July 20th at 5 PM. Location: Memorial Park

Celebrate National Parks & Recreation Day with a fun-filled day for the whole family. Enjoy family games, air jumps, arts and crafts, food vendors, and free swim lessons (registration required). Live music starts at 5 PM with the Platinum Five Band.

South Bay Cruisers Car Show

Saturday, July 28th at 11:30 AM Location: Black Angus Steak House

This event happens every fourth Sunday at the Black Angus Restaurant on E Street from 11:30 AM to 2 PM. If you have lunch at Black Angus and mention the car show, you get $15 off your check. This is a great group; I’ll post more about them soon.

Chula Vista Farmers Markets

Don’t forget about the weekly farmers markets:

  • Tuesday: Otay Ranch Town Center Farmers Market at 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday: Fiesta Street Market at the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course from 3 PM to 8 PM
  • Sunday: Chula Vista Farmers Market along Parkway Road in downtown Chula Vista from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Chula Vista 4th Fest: A Community Celebration of Fourth of July

It’s that time of year again when our community celebrates the Fourth of July in style. I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Chula Vista 4th Fest, and let me tell you, it was quite an experience!

Our city has hosted this fantastic event at the Elite Training Center for five years. While some of us still fondly remember the days it was held at the Chula Vista Marina, the new location has its charm. Sure, there’s been some grumbling about the change, but that’s just because we Chula Vistans are passionate about our traditions!

Chula Vista 4th Fest was a lot busier this year than in the past

This year’s turnout was impressive. If I had to guess, I would say over 1000 people attended the event. The excitement was palpable as folks started lining up at 6 PM, eager to enter when the gates opened at 7 PM. Seeing so many familiar faces and new friends coming together to celebrate our nation’s independence is heartwarming.

Food and Entertainment. Can we get more?

Now, let’s talk food. We had four food trucks this year, serving up shaved ice, coffee, waffles, and everyone’s favorite chicken sandwiches from Chick-Fil-A. I’ll be honest, the lines were pretty long, and it’s been a recurring issue over the years. Here’s hoping we can get more vendors in the future to keep our tummies happy and the wait times down!

While the food situation might need some work, the atmosphere was fantastic. Families brought games and balls for the kids to play with, and radio station 102.5 was there handing out flags, stickers, and bags. It really added to the festive spirit!

There was plenty of seating to see the fireworks

The Elite Training Center, while cozy, provided enough space for everyone to spread out and enjoy the fireworks. Speaking of which, this year’s display at 9 PM was even better than last year’s! However, parking can be a challenge with only 350 spots available. Pro tip: arrive early or be prepared for a bit of a post-fireworks traffic jam.

Loved to see our Chula Vista police officers keeping us safe

Safety is always a top priority, and I’m happy to report that there were no issues this year. Our local police force and event staff managed the crowds and parking well. A big shout-out to the parking staff; they did a great job. I know it’s hectic, but thank you for working the event.

One of the highlights for many was seeing our mayor, John McCann, mingling with the crowd and handing out free stickers. It’s clear he understands how vital these community events are to us, Chula Vista.

Shaved Ice was a big treat at the event. All of the food trucks were busy and the lines were long. Hopefully, next year, they get more selections.

What I would love to see for Chula Vista 4th Fest 2025

There is always a little room for improvement, and as the city plans next year’s event, here are some ideas. I’m not an event planner, and kudos to the city staffer who has to put these together. Here are a couple of ideas that would make 2025 event much better.

For one, more food vendors PLEASE!! They could have easily had four more food trucks at the event. A better option is to get a catering company with a simple menu. This way, the food trucks don’t get overrun with orders. Maybe sell hot dogs and hamburgers to keep it simple.

I would love to see some live music at this event. How cool would it be to have a cover band play classic hits to get the crowd going and hyped for the fireworks? This would cut into the spectator area, but we could make it work somehow. The radio station was trying to do its best playing music. However, with this large of an area, they needed to bring more speakers.

I love the wings at Hurricane Grill & Wings

Thank you to everyone who commented on my last video and shared their love for Hurricane Grill & Wings. This place is a must-visit in Otay Ranch, so I had to return for a proper video review. The chill vibes here are perfect for catching a game or hanging out with friends while enjoying tasty food. This time, I went for the wings, following your recommendations. We tried two flavors: BBQ and Garlic Parm. The BBQ wings were messy (a good thing for those paper towels at the table!), and the Garlic Parm wings were flavorful. We also had my wife’s favorite, Mexican Street Corn. The service was top-notch as always. Shoutout to Ivanna for taking care of us! I also discovered they have live music on the patio and a FatBurger inside. You heard that right—FatBurgers are now on the menu, and I can’t wait to try them next time.
