Chula Vista’s El Grito ceremony kicked off Mexican Independence Day! Last night, Memorial Bowl in Downtown Chula Vista was packed with thousands of residents eager to join the festivities for El Grito, a lively event marking the start of Mexico’s battle for independence. With music, food, dancing, and a powerful call to arms, the event was one for the books!

Chula Vista El Grito brought out the community

From the moment the event started at 4 PM, Memorial Bowl was buzzing with excitement. Families set up canopies, vendors served up delicious food, and the Chula Vista Farmer’s Market stayed open late, making it easy for everyone to grab a bite and enjoy the celebration. As the main event drew closer, it became standing-room only, with so many attendees ready to experience the energy of El Grito.

“I love learning about our history, especially as Mexican Americans living in Chula Vista,” said Francesca, a local resident who arrived early to snag a prime spot. Like her, many others came early, filling the space with vibrant Mexican flags, ready to shout, “¡Viva México!”

Live Entertainment and Special Guests

The celebration kicked off with Pastor Ruben Rodriguez’s invocation, followed by a beautiful rendition of the national anthem (performed by a very talented young lady, might I add!). The Chula Vista VFW also presented the colors, setting a respectful and patriotic tone.

From there, the live entertainment took off. We were treated to mesmerizing performances by Aztec dancers and traditional Folklorico dancers, each performance adding layers of culture and history to the evening. The crowd couldn’t resist dancing along when Tapy Quintero hit the stage, filling the aisles with excitement!

But the highlight everyone was waiting for was the Chula Vista El Grito ceremony itself, led by Ambassador Alicia G. Kerber-Palma, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego. When she shouted, “¡Viva México!” the crowd erupted, waving flags and chanting in unity. It was a breathtaking sight that captured the heart of the community.

Honoring History and Culture

Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, who hosted the event, summed it up perfectly: “Our event will be a celebration of culture and independence.” Ambassador Kerber-Palma added, “It’s not just about one day; it’s about every Mexican being proud of their heritage.”

El Grito is more than just a cry for independence. It’s a tribute to the spirit and resilience of the Mexican people, going back to Sept. 16, 1810, when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang a church bell in Dolores, Mexico, igniting the Mexican War of Independence. Though it took 11 years and 12 days to achieve victory, the spirit of El Grito lives on every year in cities like Chula Vista.

Families Keeping Traditions Alive

For many families in Chula Vista, this event is about more than fun—it’s about passing traditions to the next generation. “The music, the food, teaching the kids about our culture—just because we’re not in Mexico doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate,” said Liz, a local resident. And she wasn’t alone in noticing how much bigger the event was this year. “Last year was smaller, but this year? Wow. We even had trouble finding parking!” Liz added with a laugh.
