California Sushi Bar: A Longtime Favorite in Downtown Chula Vista
The downtown Chula Vista food scene is bustling with local gems and beloved favorites, and one of the shining stars is none other than California Sushi Bar. This local spot has been part of the community for over 23 years, serving up fresh sushi and tasty dishes that keep people coming back. With all the great options in Chula Vista, it’s easy to forget a classic, but California Sushi Bar is here to remind us why it’s stood the test of time.
California Sushi Bar has been here for 23 years
My first experience with California Sushi Bar was back in 2015, when my daughter chose it as her birthday dinner spot. The atmosphere, the fresh flavors, and the friendly service made it a memorable celebration. Since then, I haven’t been back as much as I’d like (Chula Vista has so many unique spots, after all!). But when California Sushi Bar recently reached out on Instagram and invited me back, I knew I had to take them up on the offer.
Nestled in the heart of downtown, right next to another local staple, the Silver Dollar. California Sushi Bar offers indoor and outdoor patio seating, ideal for enjoying Chula Vista’s beautiful weather. Unlike some bustling spots, the vibe here is calm—the music and TV aren’t overwhelming, making it an excellent place for a relaxed lunch or dinner.
Lunchtime included; Edamame, Tostadas, and Sushi Rolls
The menu at California Sushi Bar is filled with fun options—some named after local Chula Vista neighborhoods—which is a nice touch for community pride. I started my meal with the Spicy Garlic Edamame and the Ahi Tuna Wonton Tostada, which had a lovely mix of house marinade, red onions, and avocado aioli. Both were light and delicious starters.
When it came to sushi, I chose the Chula Vista Roll (naturally) and the Taco Mexicano Roll. While the Chula Vista Roll was a bit simple, the Taco Mexicano Roll was bursting with flavor. It featured a delicious mix of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, cream cheese, cilantro, radish sprouts, cucumber, avocado, and a special sauce—with just enough kick to keep it exciting. I loved how the rolls showcased local flavors, and I already have my eye on the Bonita Roll for next time, which features spicy tuna, cucumber, albacore, scallions, and ponzu sauce.
Excellent Service & Unbeatable Lunch Specials
The experience wouldn’t have been complete without the fantastic service. Carrie was attentive and super helpful in guiding me through the menu, while Martin, the sushi chef, showed his skill with every roll prepared. The care and attention they both put into their work made me feel at home.
If you’re looking for a great lunch deal, California Sushi Bar offers a teriyaki chicken lunch special that’s hard to beat. For a little over $10, you’ll get teriyaki chicken, a side of rice, a small salad, some sushi pieces, and miso soup. It’s a generous serving for the price and perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a hearty meal without breaking the bank.
Be sure to get out there and support them
With more than 23 years in the community, California Sushi Bar clearly knows how to keep its customers happy. The consistency in its food quality and welcoming atmosphere make it a place worth revisiting, whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-timer.
If you haven’t already, I highly recommend visiting California Sushi Bar next time you’re in downtown Chula Vista.
