Exciting Changes on the Bayfront as Gaylord Pacific Resort Prepares to Open

Gaylord Pacific Resort in Chula Vista

If you’ve been following the progress along the Chula Vista Bayfront like I have, then you know what a big deal this is. For years, I’ve walked by the construction site of the Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center — curious, excited, and wondering what it would look like when it was finally complete. Now, we’re closer than ever to seeing that vision come to life.

The fences are down. That’s right — the construction barriers that surrounded this massive project for so long have finally been removed. And just like that, the grounds around the Gaylord Pacific are open to the public. Even though the resort itself doesn’t officially open until May 15, the community doesn’t need a reservation or day pass to see all of the progress and improvements that have been happening. I still remember seeing the small RV resort in this area back in 2012 when it was rumored that we would have a massive project like this. Here we are, 13 years later, and it is now a reality.

More Park Space, More Access, More Chula Vista to Love

One of the most exciting aspects of this project, aside from the stunning hotel architecture, is its impact on our community. The space around the resort has transformed our waterfront. What used to be a narrow 12-acre stretch of parkland has now expanded to nearly 27 acres of public access. That includes beautifully landscaped paths, open bay views, and even more green space to enjoy.

Eventually, we will see over 50 acres of protected park and open space, including the new Harbor Park and the nearby Sweetwater Park. For Chula Vista, that’s something we haven’t had since before World War II, when factories dominated the area. We’ll have a video coming soon, all about the new Harbor Park and the exciting features it will offer—so stay tuned!

This isn’t just about building a hotel—it’s about shaping a shared future. The Port of San Diego and the developers made a promise to give something back to the people who live here. Walking around the site now, it really feels like they’re delivering on that commitment.

Now that the fence is down you can walk up to the front and all around the property. It’s amazing to see this project almost complete and up close like this.

A Project Built for the Community, Not Just Visitors

My boyfriend and I went down recently to see the Gaylord Pacific Resort grounds for ourselves, and I have to say, the energy down there is something else. People were out enjoying the open space, soaking in the fresh bay air and the incredible views. While we were there, we ran into a friend who had also come to check it out. They told us how much they loved the new layout and how exciting it was to finally see the resort up close. They also asked about whether the resort might offer day passes for locals to enjoy amenities like the pool and spa without having to book a room. Hopefully, more details will come as we get closer.

The team behind the resort calls it a world-class destination, and it’s hard to argue with that when you see the scale of it. But more importantly, they’ve stayed focused on how this space serves the community. From improved public access to expanded green space, it’s a meaningful addition for all of us.

Our very own Mr. Chula Vista was down there covering the new progress and announcing his partnership with the Port of San Diego to help promote the area to local residents.

Mark Your Calendars: May 15th is Just Around the Corner

Construction crews are busy putting the finishing touches on the Gaylord Pacific Resort, laying new grass, cleaning up landscaping, and preparing the space for its big debut. While the resort is officially set to open on May 15, they have asked the public to hold off on rushing to visit right away. Staffing will be limited during the initial launch, and not all amenities will be available. They expect to be fully open to the public by the following weekend. Be sure to follow the resort on Instagram for updates and more. Of course, you know Chula Vista Living will be there covering the event.

We’ve been watching this transformation for years, and now that it’s here, it’s even more exciting than I imagined. If you haven’t taken a walk by the bayfront lately, now’s the perfect time. The views are incredible, the space is open, and a whole new chapter for Chula Vista is unfolding right before our eyes.

Let me know if you’ve visited the site yet or plan to when the resort opens. I’d love to hear your thoughts. This is just the beginning, and I have a feeling it’s going to be something truly special.
