What is El Grito?

El Grito, meaning “The Cry,” is a powerful tradition commemorating the beginning of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spanish rule. This historical event dates back to September 16, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest, rang the church bell and called for rebellion against the Spanish government. Every year, Mexicans worldwide celebrate this moment with a reenactment of the Grito, making it a symbol of pride and freedom.

What to Expect

This year’s El Grito celebration promises to be bigger and better than ever. You and your family can enjoy a variety of traditional Mexican live entertainment and performances that will get your toes tapping. There will be delicious food and refreshing beverages available, so come hungry! Plus, the highlight of the night will be the official Grito, conducted by San Diego’s new Consul General, Ambassador Alicia Kerber-Palma.

Last year’s event was a hit; the community turned out in large numbers to enjoy the live entertainment and festive atmosphere. Arriving early is a good idea if you want to snag a good spot! Another tip is to bring your own food. They do have food vendors; however, many of them had long lines last year.
