Is there some kind of parking shortage that I was not aware of? On my last two trips to the Canyon Plaza strip mall on Telegraph Canyon Road, the parking was out of control. Cars were circling the lot like vultures circling around the weak. It was especially bad on the east side of the parking lot, next to the Mission Federal Credit Union. I wasn't there on a payday, which tends to make any bank busy, both of my trips were during the middle of the day on a Tuesday and Wednesday.
So what's the answer to the parking situation? Are that many people visiting the bank, is everyone visiting the Cox Communications office, or maybe they're all getting their maps at the AAA office. Everything east of the McDonalds was taken, what is going on here? Both of my recent trips to the center were to stop by the UPS Store, which is located on that far east side, lucky me. I practically had to park in the back of the store, next to the dumpster. I was certain that my park spot was not a legal spot. In fact I was almost on top of the employee smoking area. I was only running in to drop off a package, so I knew I could be in and out before I caused too much trouble. The Canyon Plaza has always been one of those strip malls whose parking lot is ill planned. I think it was about two years ago they redesigned the whole area. Spruced up the buildings a bit, did a little landscaping and then tooled around with the parking lot. Now there are four entrances into the center and all four have a pretty steady flow cars coming in. No matter if you go right or left once you head down a parking lane you are pretty much committed to a slow crawl looking for any sign of movement. You begin the great hunt for anything that resembles a parking spot. If you spot someone making their way back to their car you stick with them, praying they're only a few cars down. Once you see them open that door to get in you flip that turn signal on with some quickness, this spot is official yours. One thing you could do if hunting for a spot is not your thing, is park on the west side of the center, next to the Vons. This side is never really that bad and you can find plenty of spots opened up. Of course if you need to do business on the east side you do have a bit of a walk ahead of you, but we could all use a little exercise now and then. What ever the reason for this parking dilemma, if you want to get a good spot it is going to take some patience. Of course you could always park in the smoking area around back, if you see my car there then I beat you too it.
