My wife has recently taken up walking for some exercise and she has been asking me, well more like bugging me to go with her. This past Saturday I decided to join her, just to see how it felt to get up early and go for a walk. Plus the day was supposed to be one of our best this week. Now I’m not by any means a morning person, my idea of getting up early is rolling out of bed at around 10am; yeah that’s as early as it gets for me. I thought that she would let me slide a few minutes past seven, but boy was I wrong. She had me up and out of bed right on time. There was no snooze alarm this morning.
One of her favorite places to walk right now is the Bonita jogging trail around Rhor Park and the Chula Vista Municipal Golf Course. I’m sure a lot of you have driven past this trail many times. Every time I go by, there are plenty of walkers/joggers on the trail no matter what time of the day it is. My wife likes to start out from Rhor Park, but a lot of people will start from the Bonita Sunnyside Library parking lot off of Bonita Road. If you walk the whole thing without turning back, you’ve walked 3.3 miles. There are signs that tell you how many miles you’ve gone, but with so many starting points on the trail it is hard to gauge how far you’ve walked. The trail is mainly made up of dirt, but you do cut through Rohr Park and the parking lot of the library along the way. A nice thing about the trail is its wide, so jogger, walkers and the like can share the trail. When we got there it wasn’t busy, I guess everyone but me was sleeping in this Saturday. It does get busy on the weekdays after work, according to my wife. I thought it would have been the other way around. I know the park is pretty busy on the weekends with picnics and such. Rhor Park has always been one of my favorites, because there is so much room for the kids run around. Also, the new playground on the west side looks so much better than what they had before. After some warm ups we headed out at a stiff pace, and I was sure to be sore on Sunday. The trail has some beautiful spots along the way, walking past the golf courses duck pond is one of them. I did see one sign warning us of stray golf balls coming from the course so I was sure to keep a keen eye out for any Tiger Woods hopefuls with a bad aim. The walk took us close to one hour to complete the full 3.3 miles and I was proud of myself for making it the whole way around. There were a few spots I could have stopped to take a breather, but my wife had me on a strict cadence. I will admit that it did feel good to get out of bed early for once and go out for a walk. If you are looking for a spot then I highly recommend the Bonita jogging trail. There is also a social walking club called the Bonita Road Runners, for those who don’t want to walk alone. They meet Tuesday-Thursdays at 6:00am, plus Saturday and Sunday at 7:30am, a bit too early for me. You can check them out at their website www.bonitaroadrunners.com for more info.
