Every month the Staff of Chula Vista Living picks out the Top Five things we love in the community for that month. Maybe it is a new place to eat, or a great place to take the family. We pick a new five things every month. If you have a favorite spot then let us know, we love to find new things in Chula Vista. Hopefully we will get you to try something new. Check back next month for another five of our favorite things in the community! Here is our top five list for the month of JUNE 2009!
#1 Goodwill Eastlake Location: 2220 Otay Lakes Road #501, Chula Vista Ca. 91910 PH#(619)216-1900 With just about everyone trying to save a buck or two, thrift stores have become the new “in thing.” Most of Chula Vista’s thrift stores can be found along Broadway on the Westside of the city, but a brand new thrift store has opened its doors and we are thrilled. Located in the Eastlake Marketplace, the one with the Vons & Arby’s in it, you will find a new Goodwill store. One of the things they have plenty of is books, almost 10 shelves of used books. You can also find some clothing and home furnishings as well inside. Looking for a place to drop-off some unused things you might have, then they will help you out. They take pretty much anything except for large furniture. The manager told me you would have to call their collection center to set up a pick-up or drop-off. Another thing they offer is document shredding. Bring in your old bank statements or tax forms and they will shred them for you. It is a small place, but the store packs plenty of good deals for that bargain hunter in you. #2 L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Location: 333 H Street Ste #105 Chula Vista Ca. 91910 PH# (619)425-6888 This is just another great spot for a tasty lunch. Located in two spots in Chula Vista L&L Hawaiian Barbecue is on our top five list for reason, great tasting food. We always stop at the one on H St. located in the Gateway Center, but you can find their second location at 2260 Otay Lakes Rd. in L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Eastlake. Either one of them will fill you up with some terrific food. My personal favorite right now is the Chicken Katsu, tender pieces of boneless chicken coated with a special seasoning and then fried. You also get plenty of white rice and macaroni salad on the side. You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, the short ribs are another great pick. If you are looking for a catering setup then they can definitely dish the food at your next event. A must stop for those craving a little BBQ! #3 Third Avenue Pet Fest & Doggie Dash Date: June 20th 8am-1pm Location: Memorial Park If you are a proud pet parent then this event is right up your alley. The 8th annual Pet Fest is going to take place on June 20th in downtown Chula Vista at Memorial Park. Spend a day in the park with your pet as you enjoy plenty of entertainment. If you think Fido is up for the race then be sure to come early and enter him/her in the Doggie Dash around the park. There are also plenty of other competitions to take part in like the biggest dog, or even the smallest dog competition. All of the money raised from the event goes to help the Chula Vista Animal Shelter. You can also get tips and medical advice for your pet from the many Chula Vista veterinarians at the event. Vendors are also on hand to help you find just the right toy or treat for your pet. For more information check out the Third Avenue Village website here! #4 Eastlake Lake Location: Off of Eastlake Parkway & Lakeshore Drive (map) Chula Vista is just blessed with so many beautiful parks and walking trails throughout the city. Another one of our favorite walking spots is the Eastlake Lake located in the heart of Eastlake. This is a terrific spot for a late afternoon walk with the sun slowly setting behind the houses and the orange glow of the sun on the calm lake. Be sure to bring the kids and some bread so you can feed the many ducks that call the lake home. They also allow fishing at certain times of the week and day. We are not sure of how many miles the walk around the lake is, but with a view like this and a relaxing stroll exercising just seems all to easy. #5 Bonita-Sunnyside Library Branch Location: 4375 Bonita Rd. Bonita Ca. 91902 PH# (619)475-4642 Not many people know about this library but any true local will tell you this is one of the best libraries in the city. The Bonita Library, as we like to call it, is located on Bonita Rd. tucked right next to the Chula Vista Golf Course. You will also find the Bonita Museum right next door, another one of our past top five places. The library is a bit small, but its size makes if fell like a cozy coffee shop with books. They have plenty of magazines and newspapers for those who just want to sit a read for a bit, plus they have a wide variety of books available. They are currently working on getting more CD’s and DVD’s, but if you are looking for something in particular you can always ask them to order it for you. They also offer free WIFI for those who want to bring a laptop or you can use their many computers to browse the web and look at our website, just a suggestion!
