Reviews

Galley At the Marina

The seating arrangement and view of this place is the main reason to stop by and order some mediocre-to-halfway decent food. I guess this place is famous for it's Fish and Chips, which I ordered, and it was more than I could handle -- in a good way.

The calamari was, hands down, the best I have ever had anywhere in my 25 years of being, and the "lobster and seafood filled ravioli" (that's just seafood ravioli then, right?) was filling enough for me to be satisfied.

The band that was playing out on the deck was halfway cool. Singing along to some watered down Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash wasn't what I was expecting while coming here, but at least they chose some good songs.

Unfortunately, the ambiance and food couldn't overshadow the service. Though they were very friendly, my friend had to take it upon herself to get up from her seat and steal napkins, silverware, and condiments from the service cart around the corner, because we rarely saw our waitress during the hour and a half we were there. Oh well.

We live in Eastlake and I hate going to the numerous "Chain" restaurants that are dotted throughout the silly malls set up here. We enjoy eating on the water-front, but hate to drive up into San Diego. The Galley gives you gorgeous views of the sail boats in the harbor. They have a great bar and you can sit inside or outside on the deck. Haven't had breakfast there yet, but we stop there frequently after an weekend afternoon out and about. For dinner we've just been there a couple times. I ordered the Mediterranean Penne Pasta almost every time, oh so very good. My husband ordered the clams and mussels another good one. The fish and chips are pretty good, but just a bit oily. I seen the Baked potato on the appetizer menu, well...its big enough for a meal! Last time we ate there, there was a guy singing Jimmy Buffett songs.

Don't let the nautical name and waterside location fool you into thinking this is a seafood restaurant. Yes, they serve seafood, but it's evenly matched by sandwiches, salads, soups, and burgers.

The panko calamari strips were absolutely outstanding, and were some of the best calamari I've ever had. The dipping sauce was slightly spicy, and slightly tangy, and just right to balance the flavor of the calamari.

Like Alissandra, I was "convinced" to try the World Famous Fish and Chips. And like Alissandra, I was overwhelmed by the quantity of food that was presented before me. The flavor of the cod was appropriately mild, although a few small (and entirely edible) bones were present. Also, just as a note, the "chips" were American-style French Fries, as opposed to traditional British-style "chips." My only complaints would have to be that the fish was a bit on the oily side (fry-oil, not fish-oil), and that there was so much of it.

But perhaps the best part of the meal was the atmosphere of the restaurant. It was a beautiful early summer day, and my seat was on the side of the dining area facing the marina. The plexiglass between the dining area and the water was immaculately cleaned, and we saw several of the other patrons checking to see if there was even anything there. Even the birds flew into the windows a couple times, not realizing that there was plexiglass in the way. The unobstructed view of the waterfront was wonderful, and not having a cool breeze to dampen the experience was very enjoyable.

One thing I noted was that the hostess did not take names for groups waiting for tables, but rather relied upon her memory to maintain the queue. While this may have been sufficient for a slow late-lunch period, I can imagine that it would break down quickly with larger crowds.

Parking was more than adequate, as they share their lot with the local marina, and even on a sunny Friday afternoon there was plenty of room.

Overall, a very pleasant and enjoyable lunch location. I'd highly recommend it for a small party.
