Chula Vista City officials are reminding drivers that this week is “National Stop on Red Week.”

As part of that effort, “Stop on Red” banners have been posted along major city streets and intersections.

A study recently found that crashes caused by drivers who run red lights cause more serious injuries than other kinds of crashes, officials said. It also found that 56 percent of American motorists admit having run red lights and said they often do it to save time. Finally the study said that 28 percent of Chula Vista residents report seeing motorist running red lights everyday.

In 2005, 805 people died nationwide from red-light crashes, officials said.

For years, Chula Vista residents have listed red-light running among their top concerns. Police plan to monitor intersections this week and say they will cite those who run red lights.

Intersection hazards may be reported by calling city traffic engineers at (619) 691-5026 or by going on the cities website and filing a report via email there.
